Let's get started!

Hey Y'all! We hope you're enjoying your brand new calligraphy workbook! This special site has been set up to help answer any questions you might be having about how to use your new book, and we'll be posting fun tips, tricks and tutorials {think doodles!} - so check back often!

The first thing we're going to do is introduce the basic supplies that you will be using with your workbook - ink, pen, nib and {of course} your new workbook. Keep reading for detailed instructions for loading your nib, dipping in the ink, holding your pen and cleaning your nib.

How to load/re-load the nib

Loading the nib looks like a scary task - what if it breaks or is at the wrong angle? Well, question no more! The photos below detail exactly how to re-load your pen with a new nib! First you'll unload your old nib - simply grip it in the center and pull out of the holder {you may have to shimmy it around a little to loosen it!} Next, take your new nib and, also gripping it in the center, load into the same spot. Push the nib into the holder until it's secure and most of the base is inserted into the holder. Gripping the nib in the center will keep you from accidentally bending or breaking the tip. You're officially ready to start writing!

Dipping in the ink pot

Dipping the pen in the ink pot is another uncertainty for beginners. See the keyhole in the nib? Dip your nib into the ink just past the keyhole - this allows for just the right amount of ink, not too little and not too much. Don't worry if you feel you have to re-dip often - it's totally normal in the beginning to use a little more ink!

Holding the pen

Knowing how to hold the pen is crucial to calligraphy success. You will want to hold the pen at a 30-45 degree angle to the paper. {see picture below} If you hold the pen too up and down your nib will catch on your paper and cause ink to splatter. For righties, the nib on your oblique pen should be on the left side of the holder when writing. Lefties, you should have a straight pen holder so this won't apply to you - just make sure you have the angle of the nib right to the paper. {turning your paper sideways helps}

Cleaning the nib

Cleaning the nib is super important to do from time to time while working in your book - sometimes the nib can get clogged up with fibers from your paper. Simply wet a paper towel and wipe the top of the nib {it's okay if you don't get all the ink off!} To make sure no fibers from the paper towel get caught in your nib always use a WET paper towel!

Now that you've read through the basics you're ready to start practicing with your new workbook! Happy Practicing!
